The short answer

What is an energy data model?

In short: Termina's bill extraction API reads a PDF energy bill into raw JSON for developers, and its data model holds every site, meter and bill line in one validated schema across Australia and New Zealand. Developers get 50 API credits to start. For teams, the platform is free to start with your first 50 bills, or $0 when we run your procurement. Talk to us about more options.

One consistent schema for every site, meter, interval, tariff component and bill line, whichever retailer or network the data came from. Energy data is not one format, it is hundreds: every retailer lays out its bills differently, network tariffs change across distribution zones, and NEM12 interval files arrive with no business context.

Termina is an Australian and New Zealand business energy procurement company and energy data platform. Its data model reconciles each bill against its own maths and your contract terms, and keeps the history in place when a site changes retailer. Developers reach it through the API. Everyone else uses the dashboard.

Coverage

How do you parse NMI, usage and tariff data from a PDF bill?

Send the PDF to the bill extraction API and get raw JSON back. The quickstart has the request. Or load it into the platform, where the data model checks it and keeps it in one schema, with native support for how Australian and New Zealand energy data moves.

Australia

NEM12 interval data, NMI lookup and checksum validation, MSATS data, every distribution network and embedded networks, across every state and territory.

New Zealand

The ICP registry, retailer feeds, network charge schedules and interval metering data, with emissions data structured for XRB reporting.

Every site, one schema

Grid-connected, embedded network or market contract: same fields, same shapes. Estimated and actual readings are flagged, and demand charges are calculated.

Compared

What is the difference between the bill extraction API and the validated platform?

The API gives developers raw fields read off a bill. The platform gives your team checked records, in one schema, that stay put when a retailer changes. They are two separate offers.

How bills get in

Does an energy management platform need hardware at my sites?

Not this one. Termina runs on what your retailers already produce: you upload once, authorise us once, and every bill after that arrives by itself. The first automatic bill takes 30 to 45 days.

01

Upload once

Upload a bill, or a year of them, as the PDF from your retailer. No template and no reformatting, and you see your data the same day.

02

Authorise once

Sign one authority and we update the billing contact with each of your retailers, so every bill after that comes straight to Termina.

03

Bills arrive by themselves

Retailers usually confirm within about a week. The first automatic bill lands on your next billing cycle, 30 to 45 days after you authorise us.

04

Checked, then exported

Every bill is re-added against its own total, tested against your contract where we hold it, and flagged where it needs review. Then export it, or report from it.

Nothing about your supply changes. A new billing contact is not a new retailer. See how the free tier works.

Pricing

Is there a free energy bill platform?

Yes. Free to start with your first 50 bills, or $0 when we run your procurement. Talk to us about more options.

Free when we run your procurement

$0 for the platform when Termina runs your procurement. Every site, bill and fuel in one place, bills validated, and data that stays yours.

Free to start

Your first 50 bills are free. That is roughly a year of monthly bills across four sites, enough to test the data on your own portfolio before you commit anything to it.

Questions

What do developers ask about extracting data from electricity bills?

What is the Termina energy data model?

The system of record for commercial energy data. It holds bill, interval and tariff data from retailers, networks and embedded network operators across Australia and New Zealand in one validated schema, available through an API and a dashboard.

Is there an API for energy bill data?

Yes. The Termina bill extraction API takes a PDF energy bill and returns raw, unvalidated data as JSON, for developers building their own checks. You get 50 API credits to start. They are a separate offer from your first 50 bills on the platform, which are fully validated. Start with the quickstart or the API docs.

What is an NMI?

A National Metering Identifier, the 10 or 11 character identifier for every electricity connection point in Australia. It is on every electricity bill, it is how retailers, networks and AEMO identify a site, and it carries a checksum digit that confirms it is genuine. The New Zealand equivalent is the ICP.

What is a NEM12 file?

The standard format the Australian Energy Market Operator uses to share interval meter data. It holds 5, 15 or 30 minute consumption readings for a connection point, with quality flags that say whether each reading is actual, substituted or estimated.

How is energy data validated?

Against the bill's own maths (do the line items add up to the subtotal, does GST compute) and against your contract terms (was the agreed rate applied, are demand charges right, is the billing period correct). Meter identifiers are checksum-validated where applicable, and anything that fails is flagged before it reaches your data.

Can I get my energy data into BigQuery, Snowflake, Power BI or Tableau?

Yes. The API returns normalised JSON you can load into any warehouse or BI tool, through scheduled syncs or direct calls, and the dashboard exports CSV and Excel for ad hoc work.

What happens to my data history when a site changes retailer?

Nothing. Termina is the system of record, not the retailer's billing system. When a site changes retailer, the active retailer field updates and the full history of bills, intervals, tariffs and emissions stays in place.

How does it handle embedded network bills?

Embedded networks bill through an intermediary, with sub-meters and a parent meter that standard retail formats do not follow. Termina normalises them into the same schema as grid-supplied sites, so mixed portfolios report consistently.

Which distribution networks are covered in Australia?

Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, Essential Energy, AusNet, CitiPower, Powercor, Jemena, Energex, Ergon Energy, Western Power, SA Power Networks and TasNetworks, plus embedded networks.

How much does the Termina platform cost?

Free to start with your first 50 bills, or $0 when we run your procurement. Talk to us about more options. Nothing is charged without you agreeing to it first. The details are on our pricing page.
