The hospitality problem

Why do hospitality venues rarely buy energy well?

In short: We review every venue’s electricity and gas against the whole market and keep it on the lowest energy rate, automatically. It’s $0 to join, we’re paid only from a share of the savings we find, and 10,000+ business locations already buy their energy this way. Restaurants, cafes, bars, bakeries and quick service, from one venue to a group.

A venue’s energy bill is shaped by how it trades. Three things make it harder to buy well than it looks.

Long trading hours

Venues run from the first coffee to the last close, and cool rooms and fridges run all night. The right tariff depends on when a venue uses energy, not just how much, and one built around office hours can be the wrong one.

Gas runs the kitchen

Cooktops, fryers, ovens and hot water often run on gas, and the gas contract gets less attention than the electricity. When it ends, it rolls onto whatever rate the retailer sets next.

A busy venue can be large market

A busy venue is often on time-of-use (half-hourly) metering. In New Zealand a time-of-use site is priced through a tender, and the published plans a venue sees online don’t apply to it.

The process

How does energy procurement work for a hospitality venue?

Start with one venue, or the whole group

Any venue can see an estimate in 60 seconds. If you run a group, send us every venue’s electricity and gas bills and we review them together.

We review every venue against the whole market

Each venue is benchmarked on its own tariff, distribution network and usage, for electricity and gas, then priced as part of a buying group of 10,000+ business locations. Large-market venues go to tender.

You approve before anything changes

You see the saving for each venue and the rate it will pay, already after our share. Nothing switches until you approve it.

We handle the switch, then keep watching

We manage the switch with the retailer. Nothing changes at the venue and supply isn’t interrupted. Then we keep reviewing prices and hold every renewal date across the group.

One venue or many

What does a single venue get, and what does a group get?

For a single venue

$0 to join. We refuse retailer commissions. Our only income is a share of the savings we find you, and every rate we quote is already after our share.

Kept on the lowest rate. We review your prices every month, and if there’s anything cheaper we switch you. On small business plans in New Zealand: if no better rate is found in 12 months, you get $100 off your next bill, credited in NZD.

Gas reviewed with the electricity. Both fuels are reviewed together, so the kitchen’s gas doesn’t sit on a rate nobody has checked.

For a group of venues

One process for every venue. Every venue is reviewed, switched and watched the same way, whichever region or network it sits in.

New venues start on the right rate. A new venue joins the group’s process from the day it opens, instead of starting on whatever default rate the local retailer offers.

Every bill, site and contract in one place. The platform keeps every venue’s energy data in one view, across retailers. First 50 bills free, and free when we run your procurement.

Run several venues? Book a portfolio review and we’ll look at every venue at once.

Questions

What else do people ask about hospitality energy?

Do you review gas as well as electricity?

Yes. Gas is reviewed alongside electricity for every venue, and LPG too where a venue runs on it.

Is my venue small market or large market?

It depends on how the venue is metered. In New Zealand the line is set by metering, not by state: sites on time-of-use (half-hourly) metering are priced through a tender, and non-half-hourly sites are reviewed every month. Non-half-hourly venues are reviewed every month. Time-of-use venues go to tender. Send us a bill and we’ll tell you which one you are.

Will the switch interrupt trade?

No. Nothing changes physically at the venue and there’s no interruption to supply. We handle the switch with the retailer.

What does it cost?

$0 to join. We refuse retailer commissions, and our only income is a share of the savings we find. Every rate we quote is already after our share, so the number you see is the number you get.

We run several venues under different companies. Can you tender them together?

Venues owned by one legal entity go to market together as one portfolio. Venues held by separate companies each get their own pricing round and sign their own agreement, and every one of them buys with the leverage of 10,000+ business locations behind it.

What if you can’t find a saving for a venue?

Then that venue pays nothing, and it stays in the review cycle for when the market moves. On small business plans in New Zealand: if no better rate is found in 12 months, you get $100 off your next bill, credited in NZD.

Can we see every venue’s energy in one place?

Yes. The platform keeps every bill, site and contract in one place, across retailers. The first 50 bills are free, and it’s free when we run your procurement.

What is Termina?

Termina is an Australian and New Zealand business energy procurement company and energy data platform. 10,000+ business locations buy their energy through Termina as one group, clients have saved $11.2M+ across ANZ, and it costs $0 to join.
