Can a Perth business choose its electricity retailer?

Mostly no: a site on Western Power’s distribution network using under 50 MWh a year is supplied by Synergy, and Termina will say so.

The 50 MWh rule, and the multi-site trap

In short: Mostly, no, and Termina will say so before you send a bill. If your site is on Western Power’s distribution network and uses under 50 MWh of electricity a year, roughly $15,300 worth, you cannot choose your retailer. Synergy supplies you. No comparison site, buying group or broker changes that, Termina included.

Western Australia sits outside the National Electricity Market. The South West Interconnected System is served by the Wholesale Electricity Market, under its own rules. Above 50 MWh a year, or connected outside the SWIS, a site is contestable and can choose.

Contestability in Western Australia is decided site by site, on annual consumption. On Western Power's distribution network, a site drawing under 50 MWh a year is not contestable. Synergy is its retailer, and that is the end of the choice. A site above 50 MWh a year, or one connected outside the South West Interconnected System, is contestable and can go to market.

Sites cannot be added together to reach the threshold

This is the part that catches multi-site operators. Each site is assessed on its own consumption. Properties cannot be combined to get over 50 MWh. A chain of forty small Perth sites is forty non-contestable sites, not one large contestable customer, however big the group behind them.

Which is why the standard pitch in this market, that collective buying power will win you a better Perth rate, cannot apply to a small site here. There is nothing to compare. There is one retailer.

What a Perth business can still act on

Plenty, once you stop waiting for retail competition to do the work.

  • Contract terms, if the site is above 50 MWh a year or outside the SWIS. That is a real negotiation and worth having.
  • Bill validation. Every charge on every bill, checked against the tariff the site is actually on.
  • Multi-site data consolidation. Every site, bill, contract and meter read in one place instead of a spreadsheet and sixty invoices a month.
  • Scope 2 emissions reporting, audit-ready for AASB S2, built from meter and retailer data rather than assembled by hand.

None of that needs a competitive retail market. Termina's platform does all of it in WA, and 292 Perth business locations are on it today.

Where Termina runs procurement, and where it does not

Termina's energy procurement service covers the Australian east coast and New Zealand, across a buying group of 10,000+ business locations, $11.2M+ saved to date. It does not cover Western Australia. We are not going to sell a Perth business a savings service on a network where most sites cannot switch.

What does not change is how we get paid. Termina refuses retailer commissions everywhere it operates and earns only a share of what it saves. That is the whole reason we can tell you there is nothing here to sell you. A company paid by retailers has no reason to say it.

The process

What can Termina do for a Perth business?

Four steps, and nothing changes until you approve it.

Send your latest bills

We tell you which sites sit above 50 MWh a year and can go to market.

Contestable sites go to market

Sites above 50 MWh a year, or outside the SWIS, can be tendered.

Every bill validated

Every charge on every bill checked against the tariff the site is on.

Every site in one place

Bills, contracts, usage and Scope 2 data for AASB S2, whichever retailer supplies the site.

Who pays your adviser

How do energy brokers get paid?

Most are paid a commission by the retailer that wins your contract, usually built into the rate you pay. Termina refuses retailer commissions.

A commission-paid broker

Paid by the retailer that wins your contract. The commission usually sits inside your unit rate, so it never shows as a line on your bill.

Termina

No retailer pays us anything. Our only income is a share of the savings we find, and every rate we quote is already after our share.

Questions

What do Perth businesses ask?

Can my Perth business choose its electricity retailer?

Usually not. If your site is on Western Power's distribution network and uses under 50 MWh a year, roughly $15,300 of electricity, it is not contestable and Synergy supplies it. Above 50 MWh a year, or connected outside the South West Interconnected System, the site is contestable and can choose.

Can Termina help my business compare electricity providers in Perth?

For most Perth sites there is nothing to compare. Under 50 MWh a year on Western Power's network, Synergy is the only retailer available. Termina's procurement service runs on the east coast and in New Zealand, not in WA. Above the threshold, or outside the SWIS, contract terms are worth reviewing.

How much can a Perth business save by switching retailer?

If the site uses under 50 MWh a year on Western Power's network, nothing, because it cannot switch. Synergy supplies it. Termina publishes no savings range for Perth, because for most sites here the saving is not ours to deliver.

How do I know if my Perth site is contestable?

Check the annual consumption of that one site. Under 50 MWh a year on Western Power's distribution network it is not contestable. Properties cannot be combined to reach the threshold, so a group of small sites stays non-contestable no matter how large the business behind it.

Is Termina suitable for high-usage and multi-site businesses in Perth?

For procurement, not in Western Australia. Termina buys on the east coast and in New Zealand. In Perth the platform still holds every site's bills, contracts and usage in one place, validates every charge, and produces Scope 2 emissions data for AASB S2 reporting.

What can Termina actually do for a business in Perth?

Three things that do not need retail competition: validate every charge on every bill, hold every site's usage, contracts and invoices in one place, and produce audit-ready Scope 2 emissions data for AASB S2. 292 Perth business locations are on the platform today. Energy procurement is east coast and New Zealand only.

What you can still change on a Perth electricity bill

Switching retailers is one lever, and for most Perth sites it is not available. That does not mean there is nothing to look at.

What a review of your sites can tell you:

  • Whether each site is above or below 50 MWh a year, and so whether it can switch at all
  • Whether the tariff you are billed on matches how the site actually uses power
  • Time-of-use pricing and peak demand charges against your real load
  • Whether every charge on the bill matches the tariff you are on
  • Contract end dates across every site, so none rolls over unnoticed
  • Consumption and Scope 2 emissions per site, ready for AASB S2

Termina's platform does this in Western Australia. None of it depends on a retailer competing for your business.

Group buying power does not help a non-contestable site

The usual pitch when you compare electricity providers in Perth is buying power: pool enough businesses together and the retailers compete for you. On Western Power's network, under 50 MWh a year, there is no competition to enter. Synergy is the only retailer available to that site, whatever group it belongs to.

It is worse for multi-site operators, because properties cannot be combined to reach the 50 MWh threshold. Each site is assessed on its own consumption. Forty small Perth sites are forty non-contestable sites, not one large contestable customer.

Above the threshold, or outside the South West Interconnected System, it is a different conversation and contract terms are worth reviewing properly. Below it, anyone promising you exclusive Perth discounts is selling something they cannot deliver.
