NMI lookup

How to find your NMI (National Metering Identifier)

Your NMI is the 10-character number that identifies your electricity connection point, and on small business bills it's printed on page one next to the words "National Metering Identifier (NMI)". No bill? Your retailer or your distributor can give it to you.

Or skip the hunt: send us your PDF bill and we read the NMI, your rates and your usage for you. It's $0 to join. Termina is an Australian and New Zealand business energy procurement company and energy data platform.

On your bill

Where is the NMI on my electricity bill?

On the first page. For small business bills, the AER's Better Bills Guideline requires retailers to print it on page one, next to the exact words "National Metering Identifier (NMI)".

Most bills

Small business bills: page one

Look in the account details block for "National Metering Identifier (NMI)" followed by 10 characters, sometimes with an 11th checksum digit.

Contract sites

Large business bills: search the PDF

Large-market bills are not covered by the Better Bills rules, so the label and layout vary. Open the PDF and search for "NMI".

Move-ins and new sites

No bill? Ask your retailer or distributor

Your retailer has it on your account, and the distributor that issued it has it too. There's no public NMI search we can point you to.

Gas has its own number: a MIRN (Meter Installation Registration Number) or a DPI (Delivery Point Identifier), shown the same way on page one. Source: AER Better Bills Guideline, version 2.

What the digits mean

What do the digits in an NMI mean?

The first digits tell you which distributor issued the NMI, and so which network and state the site is on. AEMO allocates blocks of NMIs to each distributor, and the distributor issues one for every connection point.

StateDistributorNMIs usually start with

Source: AEMO NMI Allocation List, version 14, November 2025. AEMO describes the list as a guide only. Older NMIs can start with letters, such as N for NSW or V for Victoria.

By first digit: 2 is SA or NT, 3 is QLD, 4 is NSW, 6 is VIC, 7 is ACT (and embedded network child NMIs), 8 is TAS or WA. The 5 range is reserved for gas. As at October 2026.

NMI checksum

How does the NMI checksum work?

The checksum is an 11th digit calculated from the other 10, so a mistyped NMI fails the check. AEMO's National Metering Identifier procedure sets the method: double the ASCII value of every second character starting from the right, add up all the individual digits, and subtract the total from the next multiple of 10. If the answer is 10, the checksum is 0.

Worked example: NMI 2001985732
NMI 2 0 0 1 9 8 5 7 3 2
Read right to left, doubling every second character from the right:

char ASCII doubled? value digits added running total
 2 50 yes 100 1+0+0 1
 3 51 no 51 5+1 7
 7 55 yes 110 1+1+0 9
 5 53 no 53 5+3 17
 8 56 yes 112 1+1+2 21
 9 57 no 57 5+7 33
 1 49 yes 98 9+8 50
 0 48 no 48 4+8 62
 0 48 yes 96 9+6 77
 2 50 no 50 5+0 82

Next multiple of 10 = 90. 90 - 82 = 8. Checksum = 8
Full 11-character NMI: 20019857328

AEMO's own examples: 4316854005 has checksum 9, 6305888444 has 6 and 7001888333 has 8. Letters use their ASCII values too, and the letters O and I are never used. Source: AEMO MSATS Procedures: National Metering Identifier, version 7.4.

Why we ask

Why does Termina ask for your NMI?

Because it's how the whole market identifies your site. Send us your PDF bill and we read the NMI, your rates and your usage from it, so you don't have to find anything.

It names the connection point

Every retailer, distributor and AEMO uses the NMI for your site. It stays with the premises when the business or the retailer changes.

It tells us your network

The first digits show the distributor, and network charges are set by each network. That shapes which offers suit your site.

It points the switch at the right site

When you move to a better rate, the NMI is what makes sure the right connection point moves, and nothing else.

Send the PDF bill from your retailer, not a photo. If you've just moved in and have no bill yet, the NMI on its own is enough to start.

Questions

NMIs, answered

What is an NMI?

A National Metering Identifier (NMI) is the unique identifier for an electricity connection point in Australia. It is generally 10 numeric characters, and a checksum digit can be added to make 11.

How do I find my NMI?

Look on the first page of your electricity bill for the words "National Metering Identifier (NMI)". On large business bills, search the PDF for "NMI". With no bill, ask your retailer or the distributor for your area.

Can I look up my NMI by address?

There's no public NMI search we can point you to. Your retailer and your distributor can both give you the NMI for your site.

How many digits is an NMI?

Ten characters, generally all numbers. With the checksum digit added on the end it becomes 11 characters.

What does the first digit of an NMI mean?

It shows the state and distributor: 2 for SA or NT, 3 for QLD, 4 for NSW, 6 for VIC, 7 for ACT and 8 for TAS or WA, per AEMO's NMI Allocation List.

How do I check an NMI checksum?

Double the ASCII value of every second character starting from the right, add up all the individual digits of every value, and subtract the total from the next multiple of 10. A result of 10 means the checksum is 0. NMI 2001985732 has checksum 8.

Is the NMI the same as the meter number?

No. The NMI identifies the connection point and stays with the premises. A meter can be replaced while the NMI stays the same.

What is the gas equivalent of an NMI?

A MIRN (Meter Installation Registration Number) or a DPI (Delivery Point Identifier). Small business gas bills show it on page one, the same way as the NMI.

What does it cost to send Termina my bill?

Nothing. It is $0 to join, and we'll come back to you within 24 hours.
