ICP lookup

How to find your ICP number

Your ICP (installation control point) number is the 15-character identifier for your electricity connection, and every electricity invoice in New Zealand must show it, labelled "ICP". No bill? The Electricity Authority's ICP search finds it by address.

Or skip the hunt: send us your PDF bill and we read the ICP, your rates and your usage for you. It's $0 to join. Termina is an Australian and New Zealand business energy procurement company and energy data platform.

On your bill

Where is the ICP number on my bill?

On every electricity invoice. The Electricity Industry Participation Code requires retailers to print the ICP identifier on every invoice, clearly labelled "ICP".

Electricity

Every electricity invoice

Look for the label "ICP" followed by 15 characters. A business with several sites has one ICP per connection, so a combined invoice can list several.

Electricity Authority

No bill? Search by address

The Electricity Authority's ICP search finds the ICP, retailer and meter type for an address. The ICP address is the network's supply address, so it may not match your postal address.

Gas

Gas has an ICP too

Natural gas connections have their own 15-character ICP, shown on your gas bill. Gas Industry Co runs a gas connection search by address or ICP.

What the characters mean

What do the characters in an ICP number mean?

An ICP number has 15 characters in the format yyyyyyyyyyxxccc: 10 digits from the distributor, a 2-character distributor code, then a 3-character checksum.

PartCharactersWhat it means
yyyyyyyyyy10 digitsA number sequence from the distributor (your lines company)
xx2 charactersA code the Electricity Authority assigns to that distributor, so no two ICPs can match
ccc3 charactersA checksum from an algorithm the Authority sets, so a mistyped ICP fails the check

Gas ICPs follow the same 15-character pattern. Gas Industry Co's own example is 1000557069PG384, and its search is case sensitive, so type the letters in capitals.

Online lookup

Can I look up an ICP number online?

Yes. The Electricity Authority runs a public search by address or by ICP number, and Gas Industry Co runs one for gas connections. Termina doesn't run its own lookup; these are the official ones.

Electricity: Electricity Authority

Enter the address or the ICP at the Electricity Authority ICP search. For a unit, try the unit number after the street number, for example 150-10 for unit 10 at number 150. For many sites at once, the Authority offers an ICP API.

Gas: Gas Industry Co

Enter the address or the ICP at the Gas Industry Co search to see the connection's status, current retailer, meter and network.

Address not found? The ICP may be listed under the network's supply address, for example a corner site listed on the other street. Your retailer can correct address details.

Why we ask

Why does Termina ask for your ICP number?

Because it's how the market identifies your connection. Send us your PDF bill and we read the ICP, your rates and your usage from it, so you don't have to find anything.

It names the connection point

Retailers and the registry use the ICP in all communications about your connection, so it keeps your site from being confused with any other.

It tells us the network and meter

The ICP carries the distributor code, and the registry shows the meter type. Time-of-use metered sites go to tender; others get an online review.

It points the switch at the right site

When you move to a better rate, the ICP makes sure the right connection moves, and nothing else.

Send the PDF bill from your retailer, not a photo. If you've just moved in and have no bill yet, the ICP on its own is enough to start.

Questions

ICP numbers, answered

What is an ICP number?

An ICP (installation control point) number is the unique 15-character identifier for an electricity connection in New Zealand. It identifies the point of connection to the network, not the meter.

Where do I find my ICP number?

On your electricity bill: every invoice must show it, labelled "ICP". With no bill, search your address on the Electricity Authority's ICP search.

Can I look up my ICP by address?

Yes. The Electricity Authority's ICP search finds the ICP, retailer and meter type for an address. The ICP address is the network's supply address, so it may differ from your postal address.

How many characters is an ICP number?

Fifteen: 10 digits from the distributor, a 2-character code the Electricity Authority assigns to that distributor, and a 3-character checksum.

Do gas connections have an ICP?

Yes. Natural gas connections have their own 15-character ICP, shown on the gas bill. Gas Industry Co runs a search by address or ICP.

Is the ICP the same as the meter number?

No. The ICP identifies the connection point and stays with the property. The meter can change while the ICP stays the same.

What does it cost to send Termina my bill?

Nothing. It is $0 to join, and we'll come back to you within 24 hours.

Send us your bill
